The Plymouth Community United Way and the Plymouth Whalers hockey team worked together to host the ‘Salute to Our Heroes’ event on Nov. 20 at Compuware Arena.

The Eastern Michigan University ROTC Color Guard performed at the beginning of the game, and representatives from the Army, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marines (Navy representatives were unable to attend) were awarded certificates of thanks during the second intermission. Postcards were also available for anyone attending the game to fill out for troops overseas—overall, about 25 cards were submitted. Carole Carroll of Miracle Quilts—an organization that provides quilts to wounded service men and women at the Veterans’ Hospital—was in attendance as well.

The ‘Salute to Our Heroes’ event began in 2007 and is an encouraging way for people to give honor to the men and women who serve this country all year and a way to recognize troops overseas for their dedication and efforts.
